Issue Position: Government Pensions

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

I worked for private enterprise for some 30 years and we had a retirement plan at every place I worked. This is standard practice. However, the government's retirement plan is out of line with what private enterprise offers and we need serious reform to bring government into line with the same model of retirement -- it currently is excessive and needs to change. A reasonable plan that reflects what industry offers would be acceptable.

The pension reform I am working on will solve the problem of those who are coming into the system in the future, putting government employees into a similar plan as industry. We have to stop the bleeding before we do anything else.

The real problem is the legacy employees. We cannot, and should not, do anything about changing what those who already have earned a pension receive, but it is these pensions that are causing a major portion of the steep increase building up to 2019. This is a major problem we must address immediately.
